The United States of America and the People's Republic of China established formal diplomatic relations January 1st in 1979. In 1981, my father, the president of Shanxi University, the first row on the left of the photo, established sister school relationship with University of South Carolina, that was the first sister school between US and China after January 1st in 1979 when the two countries got together. T
he picture above is my father along with the governor and vice governors of Shanxi Province with the delegates from University of South Carolina led by Francis T. Borkowski (in the middle) Provost in 1980.
"One of the delegates mailed two novels to me, one of them is the Old Man and Sea by Hemingway, I only recognized fours English letters that time, my English was very very poor, and I was 16 years old. I used dictionary to look up each every words and to read and finished that novel"...said the Executive director of World Association for Chinese Studies.

Union County公立中學的唐納女士為閻教授頒獎，獎牌上寫著：“偉大的跨文化使者”。
